The Learning from Asia project has recently organized an Asian PhD Hub event under the theme “My Reviewing Experience,” focusing on the ongoing book project Deploying ‘Asia as Method’ in Educational Studies: Doctoral Students’ Experience in Australia and Hungary. This book is being developed in partnership with Monash University, Australia, and includes contributions from eight authors residing in Hungary.

One of the unique aspects of this collaborative book project is its approach to peer review. As the chapters were being developed, both the Monash University team and the Hungarian contributors agreed to a cross-referencing review system, allowing PhD students to review each other’s work. This method not only enhanced the quality of the book but also provided an invaluable opportunity for PhD students to gain firsthand experience in academic peer review.
During the Asian PhD Hub session, PhD students residing in Hungary reflected on their experience reviewing Monash University chapters. They shared insights on the content, key learnings, and technical challenges. For many, this was their first time reviewing academic work, making it a valuable opportunity to refine their critical reading and feedback skills.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of tone and language in academic peer review. The discussion emphasized how criticism should be both polite and useful, ensuring that the feedback supports the author’s development rather than merely pointing out weaknesses. For some participants, this was their first experience acting as peer reviewers, making the session a valuable learning opportunity.

Beyond improving individual reviewing skills, this initiative helped establish a collaborative reviewing culture among early-career researchers in Hungary and Australia. By engaging in both writing and reviewing, PhD students gained a deeper understanding of academic publishing, strengthening their academic rigor and professional growth.
